Gavin Turk

Biography
GAVIN TURK DEALS WITH ISSUES OF AUTHORSHIP. AUTHENTICITY, AND IDENTITY, ENGAGING WITH THE MODERNIST AVANT-GARDE DEBATES THAT DATE BACK TO MARCEL DUCHAMP.
A MEMBER OF THE PROVOCATIVE, IRREVERENT YOUNG BRITISH ARTIST COHORT, GAVIN TURK HONORS THE LEGACIES OF MARCEL DUCHAMP AND ANDY WARHOL THROUGHOUT HIS MULTIMEDIA INVESTIGATIONS OF AUTHORSHIP, AUTHENTICITY, AND IDENTITY. IN HIS PAINTINGS, PHOTOGRAPHS, SCULPTURES, INSTALLATIONS, AND VIDEOS, THE ARTIST REPURPOSES RECOGNIZABLE FORMS AND MOTIFS FROM THE ART HISTORICAL CANON. TURK RECONSIDERS THE IDEAS OF THE “MASTERPIECE,” THE “GENIUS,” AND THE SANCTITY OF ART OBJECTS THEMSELVES. HE HAS RIFFED ON NEOCLASSICAL PAINTING, WARHOL’S SILKSCREENS, AND JACKSON POLLOCK'S MUSCULAR ABSTRACTIONS, SLYLY UNDERMINING THE SANCTITY OF THESE ICONIC WORKS. TURK HAS EXHIBITED IN NEW YORK, LONDON, VENICE, PARIS, HONG KONG, AND ISTANBUL. HIS WORK HAS SOLD FOR UP TO SIX FIGURES AT AUCTION AND BELONGS IN THE COLLECTIONS OF THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, SAATCHI GALLERY, THE TATE, AND THE VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM, AMONG OTHERS.
