Kojiro Matsumoto was born in Tokyo and raised in Sendai-shi, Miyagi Prefecture. He earned his master’s degree from the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Tama University of Arts. Matsumoto, whose pieces often depict young girls and creatures rendered in stylistics reminiscent of yonen manga (children’s cartoons), constructs his unique aesthetic worldview by interweaving the technique and composition of traditional Japanese painting, which he learned through the distinctive Japanese art education system, together with pictorial methods often used for tobira-e (frontispiece) in manga comics. He currently lives and works in Tokyo.
